Background:One of the most important issues in the management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the evaluation of the patient's history and present symptoms. In this article, we aim to review the literature about the use of NEXIUM for the evaluation and management of GERD. We also review current information on NEXIUM use in adults and children.

Methods:We searched the MEDLINE (Ovid, 1990) and EMBASE (Verlag Pharma, 2010) databases for articles published from 1998 to July 2011. The search terms used in the literature were:

  • NEXIUM (esomeprazole magnesium), acid reflux, GERD, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD),
  • NEXIUM, and
  • NEXIUM, gastroesophageal reflux disease, andNEXIUM.

Results:The literature search yielded a total of 924 studies. Most of the studies were duplicated. The studies included 1140 patients, with 1073 patients being treated with NEXIUM. The most commonly used treatment regimens were NEXIUM (n = 611, 60.0%), NEXIUM (n = 622, 63.0%), and NEXIUM (n = 524, 59.0%). NEXIUM was not associated with any adverse events or complications, and NEXIUM was associated with an increased risk of developingH. pyloriassociated endoscopy, a longer duration of gastric bypass, andHelicobacter pyloriresistance. NEXIUM is well tolerated in patients treated with NEXIUM, with a risk of gastrointestinal and/or cardiovascular adverse events.

Conclusions:NEXIUM is a safe and well tolerated treatment option for the evaluation and management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults and children. Patients should be carefully selected and monitored for the development of adverse events and for the development of long-term complications. NEXIUM should be used in accordance with the recommendations in therisk assessment tool.

Introduction:The management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is complex and individual factors influence its severity and prognosis. Patients with mild to moderate GERD, who often are not adequately managed, can benefit from the use of NEXIUM for acid reflux. NEXIUM is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) with proton pump inhibitor activity (PPI-P) effect, but not neutral or neutralizing agents. NEXIUM has shown beneficial effects in the treatment of GERD in several studies, although the efficacy and tolerability are inconsistent.

A retrospective analysis of medical records was performed. Patients with GERD were included in the study if they had a diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) before the end of the study period and were aged between 40 and 55 years. Patients with non-GERD patients were excluded. Patients who had a history of gastric bypass surgery, such as bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy (Soperated) were excluded. Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel or R version 2.14.0. For the analysis, data were presented in a form of frequency table (frequency 0–3) and continuous (frequency 0–3) and continuous-time frequency (frequency 0–3). The study population consisted of patients with symptomatic and non-surgical GERD.

The frequency of occurrence of GERD was 0%–9% in the study population and was significantly higher in the non-surgical group (p = 0.002). GERD patients showed an increased prevalence of frequent symptoms such as acid reflux, pain during the night, or urgency, which were more common among patients with non-surgical GERD.
